Fourth Day

Today I had an amazing session with my mentor as I learned about the selection process of not only this branch, but the entire library organisation. As I sat there, all I could do was wish I was really training for a job there. My mentor is so passionate about the library and it shows how much she cares about obtaining the best possible services for the community.

I was also able to do a long stint at the front counter today, interacting with customers, which was both scary and exhilarating at the same time. I was able to see how memberships are created and maintained, check in and check out books, help with reference inquiries and the internet computers. It was an eye opener, and it bought back fond memories of when I was last employed.

Third Day

I really enjoyed today as the library opens slightly later on Thursdays. For this reason I was able to some admin and start on one of my allotted projects as discussed with my mentor on my first day. The ‘weeding’ project consists of looking at an area of books that haven’t been used for a while and putting them aside for consideration. The next step is determining if the books are in good condition, if they are, then they may be transferred to another branch. This activity was most enjoyable for me, it is something I could do all day.

After lunch, I was taught how to repair books and how to make labels for new books. Another activity I enjoy is looking for books that have been recorded as misplaced and or books that have been requested by patrons. I also enjoy tidying up books at the end the day, making sure my allocated area is ready for the next day. I was able to shadow another librarian today and I am most thankful to be able to learn such a diverse set of skill at this branch.

Second Day

What another great day! I met another lovely lady who I was to shadow for the day and she was most helpful. Once a month on a Wednesday the library holds reading time for children who are pre-kindy age and under. I was to read a couple of book and lead the children through a couple songs. I was a little nervous, but once I got into it, I started to have fun and the parents seem happy as did my mentor.

I really like the fact that the staff make a point to have morning tea together so they may discuss work and non work related concerns and I have been made welcome these sittings. I have an hour for lunch and have decided to come home to feed my baby and it seems to work out alright, for now. I am so lucky the library is not far from where I live.

I look forward to continuing as my concerns regarding my baby have melted away, leaving me free to experience and learn as much as I can.

First Day

My Practicum began today and it felt great being back at work if only for a while. I learned a little about the ins and outs of the library, from setting up first thing in the morning, such as getting the newspapers from the news agency, to placing the books back on the shelves in the correct manner, and how to close up shop at the end of the day.

I was enjoying the first session with my mentor so much that I didn’t take any notes, so I’m berating myself now. However, I will endeavor to purchase a little hardcover note book to carry with me so that I can write any information and my impressions. As it is, I’m still getting over the fact that I’m actually at the library learning so much and meeting wonderful people who are happy to impart what they have learned over the years.

I’m really looking forward to joining the workforce again, but I want to wait until my baby is at least two, in the mean time I’m studying and working hard through this degree. Perhaps I can do some volunteer work next year and I hope to leave a good impression at the library so that I may be invited back.

Induction day

My induction day was today, mandatory for those working (paid or volunteer) for the Council. I received a photo ID card and a Welcome pack.

Three others were present, although for different departments; I was the only Librarian-to-be. The Human Resource Officer went through some background and also chatted to us about the Code of Conduct, Workplace Health and Safety as well as Harassment Procedures.

I was very informative and it brought me closer to my time at the library. I’m due to start this Friday, so I’m quite excited.

Meet and Greet

I took the kids to the library today and met one of the lovely ladies who works there, I mentioned that I would be doing work experience there next month (next week really) and she knew my name! I am getting very excited, I simply cannot wait to begin!

Everything is coming together well, my mum is looking after the kids the first week and then my husband will look after them the remainder of the month. On a very personal note, I would love to go shopping for new clothes, but I can’t afford it, so I’ll have to make do. Oh well. I lost my vanity 5 years ago! Nothings screams S-E-X-Y less than baby drool!

In other news, my other subject SGY120 (Sociology) requires I do a two hypotheticals, one, a  breaching experiment which sounds both fun and embarrassing at the same time. Two, an ethnography study of the community around me. I was thinking of simply observing people who use the computers at the library to go online and to see why they chose to go there as opposed to staying at home or frequenting web cafe or Maccas, for that matter. It should prove interesting. I should mention that I am not interested in what people are looking up online, that would be a breach of privacy, I just want to know… Why?

As for the breaching experiment? I’m not confident enough to do something like that in public… What is a breaching experiment, I hear you ask, well read on.

Library Books

Library Books

I just stumbled on these old library books and just had to share. They look amazing. I love the look of old books, the way they smell and the way they feel.
